Sperm/Semen

Stem cells are the building blocks of life. They are undifferentiated cells that can further differentiate into specialized types of cells. It is important to store your stem cells for future use in case of any chronic illness or infertility. Storing your own stem cells is faster, safer and less costly than receiving anyone else’s stem cell. Stem cell-based therapies like bone marrow transplant, sperm banking has been a success in the treatment of cancer, anaemia, infertility and so on.

Sperm Banking

  • Semen Collection

Semen needed for sperm banking is usually obtained by masturbation. Many men might find this process embarrassing or uncomfortable. They can collect the sample at the private or relaxing environment of their home or another location than the clinic. They are required to keep the specimen at room temperature and return it to the laboratory with an hour after collection for proper preservation. All kinds of lubricants should be avoided as they can contaminate the specimens. Also, wide mouth containers should be tested by the laboratory to ensure that they are compatible with the collected semen and not harmful to the sperm.
An alternative to masturbation is to collect the semen sample with a condom. The condom must be approved by the laboratory as commercially available condoms can kill sperms. This type of condom is called a collection condom.
Surgical sperm retrieval can also be done in case of patients who are very ill and unable to produce a sample.

  • Sperm Donation

Sperm donation is a process of third party reproduction. It is donation by a man of his sperm for the purpose of artificially inseminating a female. The sperm is collected and preserved in sperm banks.

  • Preparing the Sperm

The semen specimen is washed to extract the sperm from the rest of the material in the semen. The unwashed semen can only be used for intra-cervical inseminations to avoid cramping or for in-vitro fertilisation or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection procedures. In case of intra-uterine injection, it may be washed after thawing. The sample is frozen in a number of vials or straws according to the quality of the ejaculate. After the necessary quarantine period, the samples are thawed and used in artificial insemination or other assisted reproductive treatment methods.

  • Sperm Cryopreservation

The freezing of sperms prior to vasectomy, or engaging in life-threatening activities or life-saving cancer treatments is known as sperm cryopreservation. At the time of sperm cryopreservation, a small amount is separately frozen, thawed and reanalyzed after the initial freeze.
